Introduction to Etching
This one-day course is designed to give you an understanding of the basic principles of etching. You will be taken through two different techniques, hardground and softground. Each technique produces a different effect. Hardground will give you fine lines and is great for detailed drawing, softground will give you a soft line similar to a pencil or pastel mark.
Both techniques will involve making a drawing on to a metal plate which will then be etched into the metal by an acid. The resulting recesses on the plate are then filled with ink and the image is printed using an etching press. During the day you will learn how to prepare the plates, transfer your images and use acids to etch the designs into the metal. You will then ink up the plate and use a press to make several prints using specialist printmaking papers.
